Hi I'm Nafeesa!

I create simple yet powerful designs by finding connections and opportunities for everyday problems. I have had a chance to explore the full design process from interviewing users to implementing designs, making me a more innovative and thoughtful designer. I hope to continue growing these skills and make a valuable contribution to HUGE.

INTERACTION DESIGN

I discovered interaction design when I created my first "stock portfolio app" powered by text messages before the era of the smartphone. More recently I worked on the Vungle analytics dashboard with 3 other designers, a product manager and team of engineers. In the first version of the product, users were having trouble navigating the dashboard, so we conducted research to determine why. We worked together to explore as many ideas as possible and finally came up with a sub navigation solution that was both simple to implement and fixed the user flow. I learned that the ideation was key to find the best solution. As a result, I make sure to create prototypes in relevant mediums and explore different ideas with other designers as part of my process.

VISUAL DESIGN

I discovered my love for art at a young age, and over the years I practiced painting, sketching and photography, which gave me a good foundation in color theory, composition and graphic design. For a project at Vungle, I had to design data visualizations for a systems health dashboard. I used colors (green, yellow and red) to indicate the health of the system and applied the same color treatment to all the graphs. This allowed users to visually quickly grasp the impact of the issue and alerted our tech systems. Now instead of being driven by my own tastes, I think about how my visual decisions add utility and a better experience to the product I'm designing.

STORYTELLING

My first marketing job was at a product design firm where I helped clients craft their product stories. One of our clients was working with us to design an emergency communication bracelet and needed help creating a video to explain their product. I worked with the founder and convinced her to share her personal story, which had inspired the idea. The video was a success among their investors and customers because it not only explained what the product did but why it was important. I took this storytelling practice to my design and I make sure that my work can tell a story and add value.

WEB DESIGN

My first web project was at Design to Matter, a product design consultancy, where I created and launched websites for our clients. One project involved building a site for Instacube, a digital photo frame that streams your Instagram feed. As the product was still in development, we wanted to capture pre-orders on the website so I built a site that focused on visually explaining the product so that it's use cases were easy to understand.  With a successful kickstarter campaign and the site we were able to capture  8000 pre-orders before the product launched.  Since then I have built ecommerce sites, redesigned company websites and built up my front end skills by learning HTML, CSS & Javascript.

My Favorite Design

One of my favorite designs is the NYCTA  instruction manual that Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda created for the New York subway system. When I lived in New York the design always inspired me, as it visually simplifies a very complex system. I have highlighted my favorite parts of the design below.

The design simplified an extremely complex system.

The new design introduced a single signage system for the subway that had roughly around 400 stations and 30 lines. By using detailed instructions that specified the correct use of fonts, colors and signs, the new design was able to swiftly and efficiently guide the passenger through the subway.

The design is user-centric

All the design was influenced by observing people using the subway and creating the decision trees subway riders face as they enter a station. The font was chosen so that it could be read from every angle. The red and yellow colors were chosen to make exit and warning signs stand out. Every detail of the design served the purpose of helping the user.

The design is iconic and beautiful

Vignelli and Noorda were able to create a design that not only served an important function but also left a mark on modern design history.

Thank you!
